Tomorrow, she starts working at a call center.
They can be ridiculously bad for your mental health, she hears.
It’s minimum wage, it’s the best paying job she held in years,
But she’ll make it, she says, no matter the turnover,
And we think of you
And we hope for you
If only there was only you.

Working mom
Why are you gone?
Working mom
Keep pushing on!

She has done her training – going on the job training,
Dreaming to be of service; thinking of helping,
But the metrics ain’t working.
340 seconds on the clock counting,
She’ll lose for rushing; she’ll lose for call dropping;
She’ll lose for helping; no way of succeeding.
And we think of you,
And we miss you,
If only there was only you.

Working mom
Why are you gone?
Working mom
Are you holding on?

Absent from home; pick up the children at six,
She is still on a call pass six,
Can’t drop the call, she’ll lose her job,
Can’t drop her children, it’s more than a job
It’s eating her mental health she fears
But it’s the only job available in years.
And we think of you,
Where are you?
If only there was only you.

Working mom
Where have you gone?
Working mom
What’s going on?

Barely making enough money,
Year after year for the same pay
Thinking somehow everything will turn out ok
But milk is now 8 bucks when it used to be five
With the food bank becoming more than a test drive.
And we think of you,
And we love you,
If only there was only you.

Working mom
Why are you gone?
Working mom
How are you holding on?

Somehow she thinks she still can make it,
As a valued person but they won’t allow it,
Because she is just an expense
To be cut and reduced;
Controlled;
Debasing you to less than a pence,
And they don’t think of you,
They won’t respect you.
If only there was only you

Working mom,
You’ve been gone,
Working mom:
Way too long.
